Voices from the Past

July 6, 7, 13, 14

11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Hendrie Park

Keep an eye out for Isabella Preston while wandering through Hendrie Park. Hear her stories about her work as one of Canada’s first female horticulturists.

Isabella Preston (1881-1965) was Canada’s first female plant hybridizer. Over a 26-year career with the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa she introduced almost 200 cultivated varieties of lilacs, lilies, crabapples and roses suitable for Canada’s cold climate. We’re thrilled to provide an opportunity for you to meet “the grand dame of Canadian horticulture” while she visits our Lily Collection in Hendrie Park between 11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on weekends (weather-permitting).

Miss Preston’s visit has been supported by the Ontario Trillium Foundation with the help of the Players Guild of Hamilton. Our thanks to Moe Dwyer of the Guild for bringing Miss Preston to life for our guests.
