Event Description

Spirit Canoes by JP Longboat

September 29, 2025; Rock Garden (1185 York Blvd. Hamilton)

The Spirit Canoe installation is the work of Kanyen’kehà:ka (Mohawk) artist JP Longboat.

For this garden journey, the Spirit Canoes represent and remind us of the teachings of the 7 Generations. The principle suggests that decisions made today be evaluated not only for their immediate impact but also for their potential effects on the seven generation to come.

The Spirit Canoes, equipped with solar lighting and subtle fabric, will journey through the Rock Garden bringing their stories and songs. They will be portaged to the waterways led by Angela DeMontigny (Cree/Metis) in the lower bowl where they will be met my award-winning spoken word artist January Rogers (Mohawk/Tuscarora) who will perform at various points throughout the evening in response to the works and the setting sun.
