The Light Within installation - colourful lanterns with botanical prints over 15 feet tall

The Light Within by Matthew Aberline with The Beautiful and Useful Studio

Interactive Light Installations

New this year, enjoy interactive light installations by Canadian and international artists that invite you to touch, explore, and play, adding a hands-on element where you create the magic!

The Light Within - Matthew Aberline with The Beautiful and Useful Studio

Matthew Aberline with The Beautiful and Useful Studio – Australia

The Light Within is an immersive inflatable garden of colour, pattern and light by Matthew Aberline with The Beautiful and Useful Studio. By day, its vivid printed textile forms create a bold sculptural landscape of secret, fantastical gardens; at dusk and night, they glow from within, becoming a luminous destination that inspires imagination and wonder. The work invites audiences to wander, gather, photograph and pause, sharing colour, scale and beauty with friends and families.

Bio: Matthew Aberline is an Australian artist and creative director known for bold, immersive public artworks that fuse decorative craft with social impact. Working across inflatables, textiles, light and performance, he creates participatory installations that invite wide audiences – often families – into experiences of wonder, learning, and shared creativity. His projects span collaborations with the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, community led creative projects for the Art Gallery of NSW, to partnerships with First Nations artists and regional communities across Australia.

Seed Bank - Jordan Shaw

Jordan Shaw – Toronto

SEED BANK presents an interactive series of sculptural forms representing scattered seeds along a trail in Mitchell’s field. The 40 forms will respond as guests traverse the path, their movement bringing the seed collection to life with light as they engage. The installation follows Shaw’s interest in data as a material to be brought to life, like seeds scattered in the wind throughout the field.

Bio: Jordan Shaw is a Toronto-based artist and creative technologist whose practice explores data as material, treating invisible digital signals as substance with texture, density, and temporality. Working across sculpture, installation, light, and textiles, he transforms wireless transmissions and network activity into tangible, sensory experiences. Recent solo exhibitions (Micak Contemporary Art Gallery, 2025) and upcoming solo show at ARTSPLACE Nova Scotia (2026) explore this framework at gallery scale, while public commissions for Ontario Place, the City of Pickering, and municipalities across Canada demonstrate proven delivery at architectural scale. He holds an MFA from OCAD University and is represented by Micak Contemporary Art Gallery.

OPTICKS - Aestivatic Aesthetic

Aestivatic Aesthetic – Hamilton

Aestivatic Aesthetic explores a reversal of natural expectations. While most animals hibernate through winter, a select few estivate – the opposite of hibernation. OPTICKS will turn Kippax Trail into nocturnal world filled with luminous creatures – twinkling winter flies, a nature-based soundscape, and ultraviolet snowlings only found by guests using custom-designed “scout scopes”.

Bio: OPTICKS is a Hamilton-based, non-profit light and projection art collective founded in 2016. The organization is dedicated to making light-based art accessible, experimental and participatory for all ages. Members of the OPTICKS team have presented works locally with the HPO, AGH and Hamilton WinterWest, as well as internationally on the Taylor Swift Eras Tour, Cochella and Paris Fashion Week. For this work OPTICKS members include John Smith, Andrew O’Connor, Lee Skinner, Cale Bradbury, Sleeveless Leafton and Darryl Gold.
