Horticultural Therapy
Horticultural Therapy programs use plants and gardening to enhance emotional, physical and mental well-being. It is part of the therapeutic repertoire used by hospitals, nursing homes, and community, rehabilitative and mental health centres. The Gardens has been offering training in horticultural therapy techniques since 1970, and we also offer outreach programs to institutions around the greater Golden Horseshoe area.
Training in Horticultural Therapy
Upon completion of the Horticultural Therapy certificate program, students have the knowledge needed to practice horticultural therapy confidently and competently, knowing how to use horticultural therapy programming to meet the needs of individuals to improve their quality of life. Our course instructor is Tami Proctor, a registered horticultural therapist with the Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association (CHTA). Tami’s practice includes working at Homewood Health Centre, independent contract work in long-term care and teaching at Mohawk College.
Horticultural Therapy Certificate Program
This series of four courses is a prerequisite to earning horticultural therapy certification.

Horticultural Therapy Outreach 2011/2012 Fee Schedule
Programs delivered at an external facility:
Program fee: $250 per program + HST (up to a maximum of 12 participants) if facility is located within 25km of RBG
Additional participants: $20 + HST/participant
If facility outside 25km radius: Instructor drive time $50/hour, Mileage charged back at $0.40/km
Programs delivered at RBG:
Program fee: $200 per program + HST (up to a maximum of 12 participants)
Additional participants: $15 + HST/participant
