About Jessica Gale, Sweet Gale Gardens

I grew up in Upstate New York amongst fields and forests. I spent the summers with my mother’s family on the Long Island Sound. This early exposure to water, trees, birds, wildflowers, fish, and insects is the foundation of my love and passion for studying and engaging in the natural world.

A fundamental part of my journey was the creation of my small farming business, Sweet Gale Gardens. I named the business after Sweet Gale, or Myrica gale, in honour of the plant genus Myrica that is found where I live now in Ontario, but also on the coast where I grew up and in the home of my ancestors.

I am currently residing in Hamilton, Ontario, the traditional home of the Anishinaabe and Haundenosaunee peoples. As a settler woman, I try to learn from the example of the ongoing land stewardship of First Nations people. I am also on a journey to discover what my relationship to land can look like, informed by my own personal and ancestral history.

When not in the garden, I can often be found on hiking trails, in or by water, enjoying the company of family and friends, engaging in creative work/play or enjoying a good meal.
