WHITE TRILLIUM
Scientific Name: Trillium grandiflorum

Sometimes people think they've found a new kind of trillium — with pale pink or green flowers. These are actually white trilliums that are old, or ill. The flowers turn pink after they've been open a few days. They also sometimes get a disease that causes the flowers to turn green, or develop green stripes.
I.D.
- Large, white flowers.
- Flowers have three pointed petals.
- Stems have three large leaves.
- Grow in woodlands across the southern half of Ontario.
- Ontario's floral emblem since 1937.

Trillium seeds are planted by ants. Each tiny seed has a tasty growth on it. Ants are attracted by this growth and they take the seeds into their underground nests. They eat the tasty treat, but not the seed, which is left behind in the nest. What would happen to Ontario's trilliums without these insects and this special relationship? Next time you see an ant, say thanks!
