CROCUS
Scientific name: Crocus vernus

Crocuses are native to eastern Europe and western Asia, and in Turkey the bulbs (called corms) of spring crocus are eaten both raw and cooked. Note: Autumn crocus or meadow saffron (Colchicum) is a different species, and it is deadly poisonous.
I.D.
- Thin leaves with a whitish stripe come up before the flowers.
- Blue-purple, white, yellow and orange flowers.
- Flowers usually have six petals.
- Dutch crocus is most common type.

The spice saffron is made from a kind of crocus. The female parts of the flower are deep red, and have been used as dye and medicine. They are also used as a very expensive spice — it takes 4,000 flowers to get 30 grams of saffron.
