Exotic fish species in the watershed of Hamilton Harbour
Royal Botanical Gardens has partnered with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to co-ordinate the development of a fisheries management plan for Hamilton Harbour. The plan encompasses all areas of the watershed of Hamilton Harbour, from the headwaters of streams and creeks above the Niagara Escarpment to where the harbour meets Lake Ontario. By working at the scale of the whole watershed, we have the opportunity to manage the fisheries at an ecosystem level.

Purpose
To help guide the management of fish communities in Hamilton Harbour and its contributing watershed.
Some examples of fish management options include:
- Protection or re-introduction of extirpated species or species at risk
- Altering angling regulations
- Protection and rehabilitation recommendations for improving habitat conditions.
- Recommendations for in-stream barriers to fish movement.
Some components of a fisheries management plan
- Analysis of historical conditions (physical/social/biological)
- Analysis of current fish communities
- Management items/issues
- Public participation process
- Sub-watershed management recommendations
- Implementation plans
- Monitoring plans

Public input
Contributions from the public will form a core part of the ultimate success of this fisheries management plan. Therefore, the planning process includes extensive public involvement through workshops, public meetings, and/or club presentations. We hope to be able to build on the successes of restoration and conservation projects that have already taken place in the watershed of Hamilton Harbour and help make a meaningful contribution to the long-term sustainability of the natural resources in Hamilton Harbour.
