DISCOVER THE GARDENS:
Monday, August 31 to Sunday, September 6, 2009

Are you interested in learning about lowering your carbon emissions through gardening practices? Do you know what a carbon footprint is and how large yours is? Come to the Discovery Cart daily between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to learn about our newest feature garden: No MOW! No BLOW! No H2O!, created with support provided by the Government of Ontario and its Community Go Green Fund. The Cart can be found at the main path intersection of Hendrie Park.

Available on Loan for FREE
The Discovery Cart is lending out Discovery Packs. Designed for ages 3 to 5, 6 to 8 and 9 to 11, these packs can be picked up and returned to the Discovery Cart. Borrow your choice of Insect or Plant pack complete with activity pages, insect nets, insect jars and identification guides.

GUIDED TOURS
Do you have 15 spare minutes? Explore and learn with our interpreters as they offer informal tours and conversations on the Helen M. Kippax Garden and Medicinal Garden (see tour times and dates below). If there are multiple interpretive staff at the cart, we would be happy to lead a tour for you on request. Questions answered anytime. Meet at the Discovery Cart, main path intersection, Hendrie Park.

GUIDED TOURS: 20-minute tours offered on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.: Helen M. Kippax Garden – Tour the Helen M. Kippax Garden with our interpreters to learn about the native plants that thrive in our Southern Ontario climate, an eco-lawn that requires no mowing, and the many ways that this 21st-century garden design can help you make a positive impact on biodiversity.

12 p.m. and 2 p.m.: Medicinal Garden Tour – An informal tour of the healing herbs in our Medicinal Garden. Learn how pot marigold has been used to heal skin damage, how peppermint is more than just a breath freshener and how the common woodland plant, mayapple, has proven recently to have cancer-fighting ability.

Tours and times are subject to change on a weekly basis. Please check this website for current tours and times. Interpreters are providing tours throughout the season until Labour Day.

Sundays are family fundays in the gardens! Looking for something creative for the kids to do? Visit RBG’s Discovery Cart between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to take part in our clue-based insect scavenger hunt around Hendrie Park and win a prize.
