Royal Botanical Gardens is a National Historic Site and Canada’s largest botanical garden, (nine times larger than Kew Gardens in London and three times the size of Central Park in New York.) The Gardens is the region’s most significant tourist attraction.

Royal Botanical Gardens is designated as a nationally Important Bird Area (IBA), Important Reptile and Amphibian Area (IMPARA), a Provincially Significant Wetland (PSW), and a World Biosphere Reserve.

Our main job is to connect people with plants. Plants are vital to life on this planet providing 90 per cent of the world’s food, 80 per cent of medicinal drugs, fiber, building products, fuel and the oxygen we breathe.

RBG Delivers
• Royal Botanical Gardens manages Project Paradise, the largest wetland restoration project in North America
• Royal Botanical Gardens is Canada’s biodiversity hot spot. Our 11 square kilometers are home to 25 per cent of Canada’s wild plant species.
• In cooperation with Environment Canada, Royal Botanical Gardens is Canada’s National Focal Point for the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation, a major component of the United Nations’ convention of Biological Diversity.
• Royal Botanical Gardens is host to the Canadian Botanical Conservation Network which includes 20 botanical gardens from across Canada, developing environmental education and biodiversity programs.

In 2008:
• 220,000 paid visitors
