DESCRIPTION: The special events intern is responsible for ensuring all external and internal Royal Botanical Gardens special events are executed as mandated by the manager, special events and hospitality. The special events intern prepares for and attends off-site events representing RBG in a responsible manner in keeping with RBG's mission. The special events intern takes direction from the manager to assist with planning, attending and working on-site events hosted by RBG. This could include, but is not limited to, soliciting vendors, organizing and delivering site plans, and liaising with contractors, various departments and community groups.

DUTIES:
- Prepare marketing material; display booths (tents); arrange travel for off-site events
- Attend on and off-site special events representing RBG in the community
- Summarize experience at off-site events for value to RBG
- Provide value-added, mission appropriate content in conjunction with various RBG departments
- Ensuring marketing materials and supplies are kept in clean and good working order

DIGITIZATION SUMMER STUDENT

DESCRIPTION: The digitization summer students contribute to the digitization of RBG’s botanical collection information. Working under the supervision of the herbarium curator, plant documentation coordinator, and curator of living collections, summer students are tasked with scanning and digitizing herbarium specimens and incorporating these, as well as living plant specimen images into RBG’s collections data management system (BG-BASE). Students are expected to summarize and report on 2010 work, and perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Registered full-time in a university or college programme in botany, horticulture, library and archives or other related discipline
- Strong computer skills and experience with database entry and/or record keeping
- Familiarity with wild or cultivated flora would be an asset
- Ability to work independently and multi-task

FIELD BOTANY STUDENT

DESCRIPTION:
The field botany student assists RBG’s field botanist and herbarium curator in monitoring and reporting on the changing flora within RBG’s natural lands and cultivated garden areas. The field botany student assists in collecting and analyzing field data for plant species at risk, for specific cultivated plants, for vegetation in terrestrial and aquatic restoration sites, and participates in other research activities designed to further RBG’s wild and cultivated plant conservation efforts. The candidate also assists with the collection and curation of herbarium specimens for the RBG’s Herbarium (HAM). The student is expected to summarize 2010 field season data, and perform other duties as required.

Working Conditions:
Indoors and Outdoors. Participant must be prepared for all weather.Heavy physical labour may be necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS*:
- Registered full-time in an undergraduate/post-graduate degree, in botany, plant science, ecology, wildlife conservation or related environmental science disciplines
- Must be between the ages of 15 and 30 at the start of the employment period and intending to return to school full-time
- Experience in/knowledge of botany, familiarity with the flora of southern Ontario, ecosystem restoration, ecological monitoring, land management
- Experience with the Royal Botanical Gardens’ natural lands an asset
- Ability to work independently and multi-task
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Steel-toed safety boots, at least ankle high, are a requirement for this position

GARDEN INTERPRETERS

DESCRIPTION:
We are looking for outgoing and enthusiastic interpreters who can share their passion for and knowledge of the features and significance of RBG’s plants and collections with our visitors. You will help make our International Biodiversity Year visitor experience more memorable by interacting with the public at our Discovery Carts, leading interpretive tours and programs, helping to develop new interpretive materials and instructing our children’s gardening programs.

DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:
- interpreting RBG’s plants and collections in a dynamic, enthusiastic and scientifically accurate manner
- setting up, staffing and taking down mobile activity carts
- fabricating and maintaining props and cart and garden supplies
- maintaining relevant statistics and preparing reports
- assisting in evaluating effectiveness of cart and garden activity centres
- developing new activities and interpretive materials and programs
- planning, developing and leading gardening programs for children between the ages of 3 and 13
- planning, developing and leading children’s and family activities at our special events
- participating in training on interpretive techniques and development of content understanding
- liaising with volunteers

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- outdoor work; may be stationed in any RBG garden area/collection on a day-to-day basis

The aquatic summer student is to assist with non-native species control programs including the seasonal operation of the Cootes Paradise Fishway, i.e. collection of fish population statistics, tagging, as well as public information and education; assist in ongoing population monitoring of fish and aquatic plant species, water quality monitoring, stream rehabilitation, and marsh replanting and assist with recording of scientific data. Also operate sampling gear e.g. boats, electrofishers, seine nets, GPS units, Secchi discs, YSI sonde, etc. and communicate with the public.

- preparing deposit slips to accompany cash, cheques, money orders and credit card transactions for daily bank deposit
- updating RBG's daily cash receipts journal
- printing and mailing new and renewal membership cards and packages to RBG members
- printing and processing web based membership and donation orders
- filing and archiving old files for the department
- updating the database with current Tribute and Memorial information from the Horticulture Department's physical files
- responding to membership phone queries, and preparing packages of promotional literature to mail out to potential new members

JUNIOR STAFF SUPERVISOR

DESCRIPTION:
The junior staff supervisor is primarily responsible for developing, implementing and administrating Royal Botanical Gardens’ Discovery Day Camp Leadership Development Program for 13 to 17 year olds. Secondary responsibilities include assisting in creating and facilitating educational, nature studies programs to children, responding to visitor inquiries, opening and closing the Nature Interpretive Centre and assisting in general administrative tasks.

DUTIES:
- Development and implementation of leadership training programs.
- Providing interpretation of natural phenomena and to promote and sell gift shop items to the public and answering general interest questions.
- Performing basic reception and secretarial duties.
- Opening and closing the building, including (dis)arming alarms.
- Manage leadership candidate registration information.
- Complete weekly time sheets in accordance with the weeks worked.
- Provide written reports of his/her activities when requested.
- Attend staff meetings.

SUMMER DAY CAMP COUNSELLOR

DESCRIPTION:
The summer day camp counsellor facilitates educational day camps to campers age 4 to 12 in cooperation with junior staff and according to the policies and procedures established by Royal Botanical Gardens. Prescribed programs have been created with a focus on natural history and outdoor recreation, science, arts and crafts.

DUTIES:
- Supervise a group of children as required and mentor Junior Staff persons
- Provide for the necessary care for each child as per the registration and health forms and as a judicial parent
- Supervise up to 9 overnight campouts with campers age 8 and up
- Provide suggestions for program enhancement and to follow prescribed programs
- Obtain and develop learning materials/resources
- Assist with the daily activities or special events of the RBG Centre or the Nature Centre
- Act as an ambassador; meet and greet the public, provide direction/ interpretation
- Report any concerns, comments or suggestions presented by the campers, their parents or one’s self to the camp director
- Complete weekly time-sheets and provide written reports of his/her activities when requested
- Attend staff meetings
- Complete incident reports when necessary
- Maintain client/camper confidentiality at all times

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS*:

- Students must have a First Aid Certificate and a police check that complies with RBG standards. Students who want to work in the camps offering natural history and outdoor recreation must have ORCA Level 1 (Canoe Certification). ORCA certification is offered as a course by RBG for a minimum fee
