Royal Botanical Gardens’ living collection of cultivated gardens and nature sanctuaries create the opportunity for people to see and explore the connections between plants and human communities. In following its mission, the Gardens is committed to providing strong environmental educational programming and hands-on life experiences, in its own outdoor classroom, to the local community.

OUR INSTRUCTORS

Ian Adams is a garden photographer, writer and teacher based in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

Richard Aaron is a naturalist who has been conducting nature walks, talks and workshops since 1991.

Kathryn Bourbonniere has instructed art courses at Royal Botanical Gardens for more than ten years. She holds a BSc and MA in art education.

Robert Bruce is a composer/pianist who classifies his style as classical nouveau.

David Fisher is head chef for Pepperwood at The Gardens Café

Joh Friedrich is an experienced tai chi instructor.

Kerry Hacket has a degree in herbal medicine, a diploma in veterinary homeopathy, and is also a Master Gardener.

John Hannah is a local educator and naturalist.

Lil Haworth is an accredited judge of horticulture and design, and an avid gardener.

Ian Hendry is our Nature Interpretive Centre manager. He has degrees in biology and education and has worked as an outdoor educator for more than 20 years.

Jill Holden is a certified personal trainer and Pilates instructor.

Natalie Iwanycki, RBG’s herbarium curator and field botanist, is also a certified instructor of Ashtanga and Hatha yoga.

Frank Kershaw worked for more than 30 years in the parks, horticulture and environment fields as a director with the former Municipality of Metro Toronto and City of Toronto.

Barbara King is the Project Manager for the Centre for Sustainable Watersheds.

Greg Klokoff trained under several world-class champion carvers and has won numerous ribbons for his work.

Nancy Lee-Colibaba has been conducting programs at the Gardens since 1982. She currently coordinates our children’s gardening, horticultural therapy and public programs.

Tara Leitch, an accredited wine enthusiast, has her BA in history. She has previously worked for Dundurn National Historic Site in Hamilton, where she led workshops and special events.

Marianne Limberger has been involved with tai chi since 1988.

Claudette Losier is a local artist who has exhibited her award-winning art throughout Ontario.

Kevin MacKay is the manager of Skydragon Roastery.

Mike McCallion, vice-president of the Toronto Bonsai Society, has studied with several top bonsai artists and has won two international awards.

Diana McCallum is an accredited design judge who has volunteered in the Auxiliary workshop for more than 25 years.

Christopher McLeod is a fine art photographer with his own commercial photography studio.

Barbara McKean has been with the Gardens since 1982 as an educator, interpreter and naturalist, and she heads our education department.

Tom Mason is the curator of invertebrates and birds at the Toronto Zoo.

Mark Morey is a long-time outdoor and experiential educator and the founder of the Vermont-based Institute for Natural Learning.

Paul Morris has a degree in biology and extensive experience in wetland and prairie restoration.

Steve Patterson has been studying flying squirrels since 1994 and has been teaching/presenting for many years.

Gina Peers is an expert in chair caning and rush work.

Dr. Jim Pringle joined RBG staff in 1963. Besides being our plant taxonomist, Jim is an avid field naturalist and a keen birder.

Tami Proctor is a registered horticultural therapist.

John Renaud is a master gardener and graduate of the University of Guelph and Humber College in horticulture and landscape design.

Laura Robinson is a rubber stamp artist and teacher of paper craft.

Les Simonffy is a local Beekeeper.

Helen Sluis is an archeologist with Dundurn Castle.

Amy Taylor has been a tea-leaf reader (tasseomancer) for more than 18 years.

Janet Tigchelaar is an Ontario home-craft judge and was a community food advisor for the former Wentworth County.

Jodi Vanderheyden is RBG’s plant documentation specialist. She has a BSc in plant biology from the University of Guelph.

Pat Vuurman is a member of the RBG Orchid Society and has grown orchids for many years.

Gwen Wilby is an accredited design judge who has been involved in the floral design workshop at RBG for many years.

Matthew Wilson is curator of Royal Horticultural Society Garden Harlow Carr in Yorkshire, England and a well-known British gardening personality.

Robert Wright is the president of the Canadian Association of Aquarium Clubs.
