Our 14th year of bringing amazing plants to loyal members. 2010 Selections: Plan now, plant in the spring.

ROYALSELECT is one of the great advantages of Royal Botanical Gardens membership — it’s a convenient and simple way to start your spring planting. Superb plants are carefully researched and chosen by an Auxiliary of Royal Botanical Gardens team of experts, and are offered to members-only at a special reduced price for purchase, either by mail-in or online.

If you are unable to make one of the Plant Sale days, please try to arrange to have someone pick up your order. If this is not possible, please contact the Auxiliary office to arrange the earliest possible alternative date for pick up as orders can only be held and maintained for a very limited time period.

Orders must be received by Tuesday, April 27, 2010.

PERENNIALS
Baptisia australis (Blue False Indigo)
This showy plant produces spikes of gorgeous deep blue flowers in May to June, followed by attractive seed pods, with lovely dark blue-green foliage. Grown in full- or part-sun conditions it slowly matures to 0.9 m to 1.2 m in height, 0.9 m in width. Baptisia is drought tolerant, loves poor soil, and attracts butterflies. With a deep tap root it does not transplant well once established, so plan the garden site well.

Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola'
This 2009 Perennial of the Year has golden striped green leaves that cascade like a waterfall and lighten a dark spot in the shady border. Delicate inflorescence appear in late summer, turning a rust bronze in fall. Hakonechloas prefer shade with moist humus soil and are slow to establish a clump 50 cm tall by 75 cm wide. Requiring very little maintenance, 'Aureola' is cold hardy to zone 5 and deer resistant.

Hemerocallis 'Strutter’s Ball'
This daylily has striking 15 cm deep purple tepals with a silvery-white halo and lemon-green throat. Sturdy plants with superior branching have exceptional bloom performance with midsummer flowers that last at least 16 hours each. 'Strutter’s Ball' grows to 70 cm in height with a spread of 45 cm to 60 cm, prefers full sun to part shade and is hardy in zone 3 to 9.

Hosta 'First Frost'
A new sport of 'Halcyon', 'First Frost' has intense blue-green leaves with an irregular, jetting yellow margin that turns white in mid-summer. This hosta grows at a medium rate to 40 cm tall, with a spread of 90 cm, and produces lavender flowers on 70 cm scape. Leaves are pest resistant and look great until first frost — thus the name. Hardy in zones 4 through 7.

Paeonia lactiflora x lemoinei 'Yellow Crown'
This revolution in herbaceous peony breeding boasts abundant 20 cm, semi-double yellow, upright, long lasting, fragrant flowers in late spring. This cultivar has an extended bloom period, is vigorous, has exceptional disease resistance to blight, is deer resistant , forms a glossy green foliage plant 50 cm tall by 70 cm wide, and is long lived. Peonies grow best in full sun in a wide range of soil types and are cold hardy to zone 3.

Tradescantia x andersoniana 'Sweet Kate'
The brilliant gold lance shape foliage of this plant glows in the sun and is outstanding even when viewed from a distance. The 2.5 to 5 cm wide flowers can last up to 8 weeks from mid-summer to early fall, require no deadheading and attract butterflies. These deer resistant plants grow in sun or part shade to a height of 45 to 60 cm with a 38 cm spread and shows even better in groups — see our special price for multiples of three.

WOODY PLANTS
Acer griseum (Paperbark maple)
Beautiful curled and peeling mahogany/cinnamon, copper/orange bark and dark to bluish-green trifoliate leaves that turn bronze, red or scarlet in autumn. In full sun or part shade, it reaches a height of 6 to 9 m (rarely 12 m) and up to an equal spread. It prefers well-drained and moist soils but also performs well in clay soils. It has no serious diseases and is hardy from zone 5 to 7.

Cercis canadensis 'Ace of Hearts'
(Eastern Redbud)
In early spring, the branches are densely covered with rosy mauve flowers. The heavy bloom is followed by small heart-shaped semi-glossy leaves that turn brilliant yellow in the fall. ‘Ace of Hearts’ grows in full sun to partial shade to 3 to 3.5 m in height to 3.5 to 4.5 m in width. Once established, it’s drought tolerant making it a good choice for xeriscaping. Hardy to zone 6.

Eleutherococcus sieboldianus 'Variegatus' (Variegated Aralia)
This aralia is handsome and highly valued for it’s effective summer foliage.
It grows slowly to about 1.2 to 1.8 m in sun or in shade, is tough, hardy and extremely adaptable tolerant of poor soils, windy conditions and urban air pollution. It can be pruned or grown freely to make a good privacy hedge.

Hydrangea arborescens 'Invincibelle Spirit'
This gem blooms from early summer, straight through to frost on new wood each year. It grows to reach heights of 1 to 1.2 m and is hardy to a temperature of -40°C. Plant in full sun as it is heat tolerant but it will tolerate partial shade. Plus Proven Winners is sending $1 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for every one of these plants sold.

Sambucus racemosa 'Sutherland Gold' (Sutherland Gold European Red Elder)
This is an extremely attractive and graceful shrub that resembles a golden cut leaf Japanese maple or tiger eye sumac. It has yellowish, creamy-white flower panicles, followed by tightly-packed red or scarlet fruits, cherished by birds. It grows 2.5 to 3.5 m high but can be pruned to desirable size. It does best in partial shade and moist soils although will tolerate dry soils and is hardy from zone 4 to 6.

Schyzophragma hydrangeoidea 'Moonlight'
This self-supporting climber has very attractive heart-shaped leaves with a light-silver marbled sheen that turn orange and yellow in the fall. Reaching about 6 to 9 m over time, 'Moonlight' requires patience as it takes a few years to establish and bloom with flat-topped creamy white flowers appearing in July. Grows in part to full shade and over time the bark develops some exfoliation characteristics. Hardy to zones 5 to 9.

Syringa x 'Penda' Bloomerang
Imagine a lilac that blooms most of the gardening season. In spring Bloomerang blooms profusely and with deadheading and a short rest, it reblooms about mid-summer and flowers until frost. Rich purple flower buds open up to a very fragrant lavender mauve. This dwarf lilac grows to 1.5 m tall by 1.2 m wide, a perfect size for city gardens. It loves full sun and tolerates partial shade. Hardy to zone 4.
