Cootes to Escarpment Conservation and Land Management Strategy

Project Work Plan

Cootes to Escarpment Conservation and Land Management Strategy Development

The Cootes to Escarpment Strategy will be developed through the Steering Committee composed of the major land owner representatives. Significant input from the public will be sought to identify issues, goals, and recommended actions to assist in the preparation of this important document. The final document could potentially identify areas for park infrastructure, sustainable forms of recreation, and actions to enhance or protect the natural features and the functions of the numerous environmentally significant habitats within the study area on these public/semi-public lands.

The Work Plan for the Cootes to Escarpment Strategy will be carried out in two phases.

Phase 1: Background Report

The first phase involves collection of background material for the area. Guided by the Steering Committee, this will be completed primarily through a literature review undertaken by project staff. It will include information on cultural, environmental and economic conditions. This phase started in July 2007 and will be completed December 2007. The document will be the starting point for Phase 2.

Phase 2: Strategy Development

This phase includes public consultation and plan development. The Background Report will be used to stimulate ideas and discussion of issues that will lead to development of the recommended strategy. The project will be presented to the public at an Open House in early 2008 (see below). Individuals representing a cross section of interests will be sought to form a volunteer Stakeholder Advisory Committee. The Stakeholder Advisory Committee is essential to development of the Cootes to Escarpment Strategy to help define issues and actions that should be considered in the final plan. The first half of 2008 will include the initial community consultation. In addition to the Stakeholder Advisory Committee, a Community Forum May 10, 2008 will be held to identify and discuss issues with a broader group of individuals from the community. The ideas and recommendations brought forward by these public forums will assist the Steering Committee in formulating the plan which was presented to the public in February 2009 for comment and review. The final plan will include a list of actions, identify who will be responsible for implementation of each action, establish a timetable for completion, and estimate the cost of the actions.
