This sponsorship was announced at the official inauguration of the Festival by the Hydro-Québec spokesperson, Mrs. Mireille Robitaille on behalf of the regional director, Mr. Daniel Gagnon on June 21st. For the very first edition of the Festival where nine garden designers from America and Europe are gathered at the Jardins de Métis, a sum of $5,000 is being contributed by Hydro-Québec. Environmentally conscious for many years, Hydro-Québec saw in this Festival another occasion to promote quality of life by the landscaping of our surroundings. Being a leader in the preservation and restoration of the lanscape surrounding its installations and other building sites, Hydro-Québec accepted the Jardins de Métis proposal as the natural thing to do. CONSERVANCY FOR RARE AND ENDANGERED PLANTSAnother important contribution by Hydro-Québec is being made to the Conservancy for rare and endangered plants which will be layed out in a new area of the Jardins de Métis in 2001. A sum of $30,000 has been granted by Hydro-Québec for this part of the site which will become the first Conservancy of its kind in Canada. In the future, Hydro-Québec will be closely associated with the Conservancy for rare and endangered plants whose main purpose is to contribute to the safeguard of the biodiversity of the St-Lawrence basin. In the Conservancy at the Jardins de Métis, plants in a precarious state will be studied and ways to help their re-introduction into nature will be tested. In virtue of its outstanding reputation and its popularity as a tourist attraction, the Jardins de Métis is a locomotive for the tourism industry in the region to which Hydro-Québec is proud to add its own energy.
