Cucumber Tree

The Cucumber tree is pollinated by bees and their seeds are transported by birds. The flowers are large and white and smell lovely. Another name for Cucumber tree is Magnolia.

The Cucumber tree prefers moist and swampy sites. Many of these have been lost to logging and agriculture.

This tree is officially listed as Endangered by COSEWIC.

Blue-eyed Mary

They are pollinated by bumblebees and spread their seeds by wind. When it grew in Canada, Blue-eyed Mary preferred rich soil in open wooded areas.

There are no known populations of Blue-eyed Mary in Canada. It has been designated by COSEWIC as extirpated (extinct).

Swamp-Rose Mallow

This perennial flowering plant shares roots with its neighbour Swamp-Rose Mallow plants to have one root system.

Their seeds are dispersed after being eaten by ducks and often float in the water. The seedlings grow in open coastal marshes, wet woods and thickets.

These areas are often drained by people and this has put the Swamp-Rose Mallow on the COSEWIC list as Vulnerable.

Birds-Foot Violet

This plant doesn't have stems, but instead grows its stalks and leaves from the underground rhizome.

The flowers are pollinated by butterflies and bumblebees. When the seeds are ready, they are projected a few feet from the plant and sometimes picked up by ants.

The Birds-Foot Violet is in danger from mowing and the use of chemical herbicides. Since it often colonizes areas where there had been a fire, people stopping natural fires means that the violet is outcompeted by the woody species that would have died in a fire.

COSEWIC list as Threatened.
