Birds-Foot Violet
This plant doesn't
have stems,
but instead grows its stalks and leaves from the underground rhizome.
The flowers are pollinated
by butterflies and bumblebees. When the seeds are ready, they are
projected a few feet from the plant and sometimes picked up by ants.
The Birds-Foot Violet
is in danger from mowing and the use of chemical
herbicides.
Since it often colonizes
areas where there had been a fire, people stopping natural fires means
that the violet is outcompeted by the woody species
that would have died in a fire.
